Volumes

Samudera of Indonesia has strengthened
its position as one of the leading common feeder carriers
in the Middle East. During 2002, the company moved some
280,000 TEUs on services based around the Dubai hub,
about 25% more than the year before. Samudera reports
that it experienced especially strong growth in the
second half of the year with carryings about 20% higher
than in the first half. Within the Gulf, Samudera has
a comprehensive network that serves all the major ports
except Umm Qasr and Doha. It also has a significant
share of the feeder market between the Indian subcontinent
and the Gulf. This has been strengthened over the past
year, with larger vessels being deployed on key routes
to the UAE. Saliya Senanayake, managing director of
Samudera's Dubai operation, said, "We took a decision
to consolidate, to try and rationalise services to arrive
at a better product for both Samudera and its customers." |
